The Prickly mandrel gorse ( Calicotome spinosa ) is a plant art , which for the sub-family of papilionaceous part (Faboideae) within the family of the Leguminosae (Fabaceae).

features

The deciduous, sparsely branched shrub with sturdy spiny thorns reaches a height of one to two meters. The young shoots are slightly hairy, but later glabrous. The stalked leaves are alternate and pinnate in three places. The oval feathers are up to 1.5 cm long. These fall off in early summer and turn black as they dry. The flowers are golden yellow and around 1.5 cm long. These are 1-4 in the leaf axils. The calyx has no teeth when it blooms. Flowering time is from April to May. The 4 cm long fruits are bare pods that shine black when ripe. They appear from July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24 or 50-52.

Occurrence

Macchia , thickets , garigues , rock bushes or burned areas are preferred as locations . The species occurs only in the western Mediterranean area and is occasionally used in horticulture.
