Dorothea (ship)

Dorothea was the name of two warships of the Brandenburg Navy . They were named after Dorothea von Brandenburg , the second wife of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg .

Dorothea (1678-1681)

The first frigate Dorothea was built in 1678 by the Dutch shipbuilder Gillis C. Peckelhering in Kolberg . Soon after commissioning, the underwater hull had to be reinforced with thicker wooden planks. In 1680 and 1681 the frigate took part in pirate operations against Spain . On September 16, 1680, under the command of Thomas Alders , the ship brought up the Spanish frigate Carolus Secundus with a Kurbrandenburg squadron under Claus von Bevern off Ostend , which was then taken over as Margrave of Brandenburg in the Brandenburg fleet. At the end of 1681 the Dorothea was renamed the Golden Lion . (The name Dorothea was transferred to another ship in January 1682, the frigate Wappen von Brandenburg .) In August 1682 the ship was moved from Pillau in the Baltic Sea to Emden on the North Sea coast . As part of the colonial expansion of the Great Elector, the frigate made numerous trips to the West African possessions of Brandenburg ( Groß Friedrichsburg ) and the West Indies in the Caribbean from 1683 to 1695 . Wear and damage caused by operations in the tropics in 1695 meant that the Golden Lion on the Caribbean island of St. Thomas had to be abandoned and scrapped.

The second frigate Dorothea was a warship of the Kurbrandenburg fleet. It was built in 1678 by Gillis C. Peckelhering in Kolberg and initially put into service as Friedrich Wilhelm under the name of the Elector . Soon after commissioning, the hull had to be reinforced with thicker wooden planks. In 1680 and 1681 the frigate took part in operations against Spain . On September 16, 1680, the ship with a Kurbrandenburg squadron under Claus von Bevern brought the Spanish frigate Carolus Secundus off Ostend , which was then taken over into the Brandenburg fleet, and on September 30, 1681 it took part in the sea battle with Thomas Alders' squadron at Cape St. Vincent (1681) ( Portugal ). After returning from the operations against Spain, the ship was laid up in Königsberg . At the end of 1681, Friedrich Wilhelm was renamed the Brandenburg coat of arms . The ship was renamed again in early 1682. She was now called Dorothea after the second wife of the Great Elector , whose wood-carved portrait was attached to the transom of the frigate. In October 1684 the relocation to Emden took place . As part of the colonial expansion of the Great Elector, the frigate made several trips to the West African possessions of Brandenburg and the West Indies in the Caribbean from 1687 to 1690 . Wear and damage caused by operations in the tropics in 1690 meant that the Dorothea had to be laid up in Emden and finally had to be scrapped in 1692.
