The Palais Vischer

The Palais Vischer is a classical city palace , which today serves as a museum on the history of the Baden-Württemberg city of Calw .

history

The palace at Bischofstrasse 48 was built in 1787–1791 according to plans by the Württemberg court architect Reinhard Ferdinand Heinrich Fischer for the timber and raft dealer Johann Martin Vischer. In 1825 it was sold to the cotton mill entrepreneur Carl Heinrich Staelin. After Staelin's bankruptcy in 1902, the manufacturer Ludwig Schüz bought the property. In 1961 it was acquired by the city of Calw.

It is one of the few remaining private buildings designed by the court architect Reinhard Ferdinand Heinrich Fischer, who was important for his clear Swabian classicism . Today the palace houses a museum.

architecture

The facade faces the Bischofstrasse, which is only built on one side. The building has short wings facing the mountainside.

The farm yard including the stable building was laid out next to the main building because of the narrow slope. This meant that the most common gateway to the farm wing and stables was no longer necessary. Instead, the architect succeeded in designing a representative vestibule , from where an elegant stairway connects the entrance hall and the upper floors.

The business premises, storage rooms and a carriage shed were located on the ground floor , the two residential floors above were optically connected by the stucco design and set off from the ground floor. The facade decoration emphasized the first floor as the main floor, although the room and window height on the second floor are the same. The vestibule was located on the ground floor behind the central projection, and the salons on the residential floors.

The facade was originally kept in red, light red and ocher, which created three-dimensional effects. Today the building has a total of eight different colors.

The stairwell and possibly also the vestibule were painted up to the parapet height; the basic tone should have been light blue. Bandings in light red and ocher set off this part of the walls from the upper areas of the walls, which were painted in a single color light gray.

In 1870 the building received gas lighting and the corridors were separated from the stairwell by glass doors. In 1902 the top floor was expanded into an apartment. In 1962 a total renovation took place, to which the furnishings in the upper hall fell victim.
