Ulrich Rülein von Calw (also: Ulrich Rülein von Kalbe , Ulricus Molitoris de Calb and U. Kalb (us) ; * July 4, 1465 in Calw , † 1523 in Leipzig ) was a humanist , doctor , mathematician and mining scientist . He was also active as a geodesist , town planner and astrologer . He was mayor of the mining town of Freiberg for five years .

Live and act

From 1485 Ulrich Rülein von Calw, the son of a miller, studied at the University of Leipzig , where he probably also received his doctorate in medicine. In 1487 he was a Baccalaureus and in 1490 Magister artium . He studied medicine and mathematics . He is said to have received the order from the Saxon Duke Georg in 1496 (according to the Freiberger Chronik von Möller) to build a "Neustadt am Schreckenberg", today's town of Annaberg . In 1497, Rülein von Calw was appointed city ​​physician by the city of Freiberg . Here he worked as a surveyor and civil engineer, mining expert and astrologer. He further developed the pocket sundial into a compass or angle measuring instrument. In 1505 his book Eyn, well-organized and useful, was published in Augsburg , how to search for and find mines , the first scientific treatise on mining in Germany . As a doctor ( physicus ordinarius ) he fought against the plague in 1497 .

In 1508 he became a citizen of Freiberg, in 1509 a councilor and from 1514 to 1519 ruling mayor . Ulrich Rülein von Calw founded the first humanistic grammar school in Saxony in 1515 . He was accepted into the Freiberg Knappschaft in 1519 , but left Freiberg in 1519 due to hostility towards his school and went to Leipzig , where he worked as a professor of medicine. His last assignment, determining the location and developing the development plan for Marienberg , he received from Heinrich the Pious in 1521 .

Ulrich Rülein von Calw was married to Katherina Hausmann. His daughter Margarita was the wife of Valentin Alnpeck and mother of the Dresden goldsmith Martin Alnpeck.
