Dorothee Kern , born as Dorothee Hübner (born January 19, 1966 ) is a German biochemist and former basketball player .

Life

The daughter of the biochemist Gerhard Hübner graduated from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in 1989 and completed a doctoral thesis in biochemistry there in 1994 . For her doctoral thesis, she was awarded the "Dorothea Erxleben Prize". From 1995 to 1998, she worked in the structural biology department of the chemistry and biology department at the University of California, Berkeley in the United States . In 1999 she took up a position as assistant professor of biochemistry at Brandeis University in the US state of Massachusetts , where she was appointed to a full professorship in 2004. In addition, in 2005 Kern became a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Washington, DC. In 2003 she received the "Pfizer Award" from the American Society for Chemistry and in 2004 the "Margaret Oakley Dayhoff Prize" from the Biophysical Society of the USA. Her scientific work focuses on protein dynamics in atomic resolution, the evolution of enzyme catalysis, allostery and biological regulation, and drug development based on protein dynamics. Kern worked in part on research work with her brother, the physicist Christian Huebner . In 2016, Kern and other scientists were among the founders of Relay Therapeutics , a company in the United States that develops pharmaceuticals and into which investors put more than $ 500 million. On May 17, 2017, Dorothee Kern became a member of the Human Genetics and Molecular Medicine section with matriculation no. 7737 accepted into the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

She played basketball for the BSG KPV 69 Halle and was named basketball player of the year in the GDR in 1988. The development player received 48 calls-up for the GDR national team and in 1991 played seven A-international matches for the German Basketball Federation . In 2013, Kern became world champion in the age group 45+ with the German selection.

At Brandeis University, Kern contributed her basketball skills as a member of the selection committee that led the search for a trainer for the university team.

Kern's daughter Nadja played basketball at the University of California, San Diego , where she studied biochemistry, while her younger daughter Julia became a member of the US national cross-country skiing team.
