Dorothy Knowles

Dorothy Knowles (born March 28, 1906 in Johannesburg , † November 10, 2010 in London ) was a British Romance studies and drama scholar.

life and work

Dorothy ("Diana") Knowles came to Leeds with her mother from South Africa in 1912 after the death of her father . She studied at the University (degree in 1928) and at the Sorbonne . In Paris she completed her habilitation with the two thèses La réaction idéaliste au théâtre depuis 1890 (Paris, Droz, 1934; Geneva, Slatkine, 1972) and La Censure au théâtre et au cinématographe (published in English udT The Censor, the drama and the film, 1900-1934 , London, Allen and Unwin, 1934). She taught at Liverpool University from 1934 to 1967 and then until the 1980s at Bedford College , where her husband, John Stephenson Spink , whom she married in 1940, was a professor of French. Dorothy Knowles was also a talented dancer and athletically successful fencer. She died at the age of 104.

Dorothy Knowles must not be confused with the Canadian painter of the same name (* 1927).
