Dorset is an unincorporated community in Henrietta Township of Hubbard County in the state of Minnesota of the United States . The place has around 20 inhabitants.

location

Dorset is located in north-central Minnesota, about nine kilometers northeast of Park Rapids and 250 kilometers as the crow flies northwest of Minneapolis . The place is located in a lake-rich area south of the Paul Bunyan State Forest . North of Dorset are Boulder Lake , Big Sand Lake and Little Sand Lake , to the south is Lake Belle Taine and to the west is Sweitzer Lake . Besides Park Rapids, Nevis is the only other neighboring town.

history

In 1898 the local post office was named Dorset, and in the following years a small settlement developed around the post office. The post office in town was closed in 1964.

In September 2014, two restaurants in Dorset were destroyed by fire. Both buildings were rebuilt and reopened by May 2016.

mayor

Dorset has become internationally known for holding an annual “mayor election”, in which residents of the town can write any name on a ballot for one US dollar, from which the “mayor” is drawn. This led to the then three-year-old Robert Tufts being appointed Mayor of Dorset in August 2012. In August 2013 he was drawn again as mayor and replaced the following year by the 16-year-old Eric Mueller. From August 2015 to August 2016 James Tufts, the younger brother of Robert Tufts, was Mayor of Dorset, he was "replaced" in 2016 by the then four-year-old Gwendolyn Davis.

Since Dorset is not an incorporated city , the mayor's office in the village is only symbolic. The money raised through the elections is invested in village projects or donated to charity.

Economy and Infrastructure

The economy in Dorset is largely shaped by tourism . Several cycling and hiking trails run through the village, including the 79-kilometer Heartland State Trail , and there are several campsites and resorts in the vicinity of the village. There are four restaurants in Dorset, which is why the place is known as the Capital of the World restaurant in terms of population-to-restaurant ratio .

Dorset is on Minnesota Route 226 , just under two and a half kilometers north of Minnesota Highway 34 , which connects the settlement with Park Rapids and Walker . The US Highway 71 is about eleven kilometers from Dorset removed.
