Dorylaion ( ancient Greek Δωρύλαιον; Latin form Dorileon or Dorylaeum ), Germanized Dorylaeum , was an ancient city in northern Phrygia in Asia Minor . Today it is an Eskişehir district under the name Şarhöyük .
The city already existed under the Phrygians, but is only mentioned in written sources in Roman times. In the Roman Empire it was a trading post, in the Byzantine Empire it was a diocese . After the Battle of Mantzikert (1071) it was conquered by the Seljuks .
During the Crusades , two battles took place near Dorylaion, which at that time was already in ruins. During the First Crusade , the Crusaders defeated the Seljuks here, their first major victory ( Battle of Dorylaeum (1097) ). During the Second Crusade it was the site of a heavy defeat for the Crusaders ( Battle of Dorylaeum (1147) ).
The Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos fortified Dorylaion in 1175, but lost it to the Seljuks in 1176 after the battle of Myriokephalon . In 1240 Dorylaion was conquered by the Ottomans .
