Walther Ruge

Walther Ruge (born April 23, 1865 in Dresden , † May 11, 1943 in Radebeul ) was a German geographer and high school teacher.

Life

Walther Ruge, the second son of the geographer Sophus Ruge , attended grammar school in Dresden and from 1883 studied classical philology and history at the University of Tübingen , where he was influenced by the ancient historian Alfred von Gutschmid . On Gutschmid's advice, Ruge moved to Leipzig University in 1885 . There he was particularly influenced by the archaeologist Curt Wachsmuth , a specialist in Greek topography. Ruge belonged to his archaeological society, in addition to the philological society of Otto Ribbeck and the historical seminar under Wilhelm Arndt , Wilhelm Maurenbrecher and Eduard Meyer . In 1888 he was with the dissertation Quaestiones Strabonianae doctorate .

Like his father, Ruge was concerned with historical geography. He wrote numerous articles on the geography of ancient Asia Minor for the revision of Pauly's Realencyclopadie der classical antiquity ( Pauly-Wissowa ).

After graduating, Ruge worked as a senior teacher at the König-Albert-Gymnasium in Leipzig . From 1911 to 1930 he was director at the grammar school in Bautzen . After retiring, he moved to Kötzschenbroda , which was incorporated into the town of Radebeul in 1935, at Borstrasse  31. He died on May 11, 1943 at the age of 78.

Ruge was the father of the naval inspector and military writer Friedrich Ruge and was related to Peter von Zahn through his sister-in-law .
