Konrad Kretschmer (born July 28, 1864 in Berlin ; † November 11, 1945 there ) was a German geographer .

Life

Konrad Kretschmer, the son of the painter Albert Kretschmer , studied at the University of Berlin and was founded in 1889 with a dissertation introduction to the history of physical geography in the Christian Middle Ages, PhD ; his brother Paul Kretschmer (1866–1956, linguist) was one of the opponents . His research focus became historical geography . From April 1, 1890 to April 1, 1891, he undertook a research trip to Italy on behalf of the Society for Geography in Berlin, where he viewed documents on historical geography and published numerous new finds.

After his return , Kretschmer completed his habilitation in 1893 with Ferdinand von Richthofen . Since then he has worked as a private lecturer at the university and at the same time as a geography teacher at the Prussian War Academy . Geography lessons there were cut more and more over the years, and in 1907 they were completely removed from the curriculum. From then on, Kretschmer only worked at the university, where he was appointed associate professor in 1920. In 1929 he retired.

Kretschmer wrote numerous maps and studies on historical geography. His main works are the manuals Historical Geography of Central Europe (Munich 1904; reprint Osnabrück 1964) and History of Geography (Berlin 1912; second edition 1923).
