Dorytomus filirostris is a beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae). The species wasfirst describedby Leonard Gyllenhaal in 1836 as Erirhinus filirostris . The type epithet is derived from Latin: filum for "thread" and rostrum for "trunk".

features

The beetles are 4–5.5 mm long. They have extremely thin and long antennae and proboscis (rostrum). The beetles are reddish or yellowish-brown in color, the ventral side is dark. The dorsal side shows yellowish scale hair. The antennae and legs are colored light red-brown. The sides of the pronotum are approximately parallel from the base, the pronotum only tapers near the front end. The antennae of the females is approximately half the length of the trunk, while this is closer to the tip of the trunk of the males. Typically for the subfamily Curculioninae , the femora of all pairs of legs have teeth.

distribution

Dorytomus filirostris is common in central and southern Europe. The weevil species is found in the British Isles . In the north the occurrence extends to Denmark, in the south to Corsica , in the east to Bulgaria and Belarus.

Way of life

Dorytomus filirostris is a univoltine species, which means that it only develops one generation per year. The beetles are mainly observed in spring from April to June. The females lay their eggs in the male catkins of various poplar species , in particular silver poplar ( Populus alba ), black poplar ( Populus nigra ) and bastard black poplar ( Populus × canadensis ). The larval development takes place within the kitten, the pupation in the soil. The new generation beetles appear in autumn and hibernate.
