Grant Naylor

Grant Naylor was the pseudonym of the British writer duo Rob Grant and Doug Naylor , who were among other things responsible for Red Dwarf , which was produced as a book - and a very successful television series .

Grant and Naylor themselves referred to this pseudonym as a “ gestalt entity ” , something that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Creation and production of Red Dwarf

The collaboration between the two authors began in the mid-1980s when the duo developed programs such as Cliché and its successor Son of Cliché as co-authors for BBC Radio 4 . Today the episodes from 1983 to 1987 are broadcast on the digital broadcaster BBC Radio 7 . Grant and Naylor have also written for television programs such as Spitting Image , The 10 Percenters, and various projects by Jasper Carrott ( Carrott's Lib , 1982).

The duo is also featured in the credits for the lyrics to The Chicken Song and a number of other musical parodies of the satirical television show Spitting Image . The Chicken Song won the Silver Disc in the United Kingdom for its sales figures , which is quite comparable to the gold record common in German-speaking countries and was at the top of the British single charts for three weeks in 1986 .

The Grant Naylor -Collaboration, what to call them later, is best known for the creation of science fiction - Comedy -TV series Red Dwarf . Grant in particular has been recognized several times for the fact that the humor and esprit of the first episodes played a bigger role. Rob Grant even appeared in 1989 in the episode Backwards without mention in the credits as a man who does not smoke his cigarette . The later episodes of Red Dwarf were produced by a company named after the pseudonym: Grant Naylor Productions .

In the second half of the 1990s after the success of the series sixth season, the collaboration ended when Rob Grant blamed artistic differences for his departure from the production team, leaving Doug Naylor with sole responsibility for the series. Grant's main reason, however, was rather that, in his own words , he wanted more than just Red Dwarf on his headstone as a tribute.

During the joint work time for Red Dwarf they wrote in six seasons of 36 episodes and two books together, recorded for the last four as producer responsibility and resulted in several episodes himself directed .

After the separation

Doug Naylor went on to produce seasons 7 and 8 in collaboration with other writers. Since 2007, Grant Naylor Productions has been busy getting production going for the DVD release of Red Dwarf and preparing for the Red Dwarf's return in a three-part special, Red Dwarf: Back ot Earth , released in 2009.

Rob Grant, on the other hand, wrote two independent television series, Dark Ages and Strangerers , in 1999 and 2000 , and edited the script for Stressed Eric . In recent years, it further wrote addition to the aforementioned Red Dwarf - Spinoff three other novels; Colony (2001), Incompetence (GollanczF.) (2004) and Fat (GollanczF.) (2006).
