The Armenian Navy Band ( ANB ) is an Armenian world music formation that was founded in 1998 by Arto Tunçboyacıyan .

history

In 1998 Arto Tunçboyacıyan decided to return to Yerevan after a first short visit to Armenia . There he met the pianist and keyboardist Vahagn Hayrapetyan . Together with him he was looking for ten other Armenian musicians who still form the Armenian Navy Band today.

In 1999 the first CD Bzdik Zinvor was recorded. The Armenian Navy Band's first European tour in 2000 through Italy , Germany , Austria and Spain was a great success. In 2001 they recorded their second album New Apricot in Istanbul . In the same year they were celebrated by the public at the Tanz & FolkFest in Rudolstadt, the largest folk and world music festival in Germany.

In autumn 2003 the first and so far only part of a sound project was realized in a studio in Yerevan: Sound of Our Life - Part One: “Natural Seeds” . This album was released in Europe in March 2004. It is almost an hour long work by the Armenian Navy Band, a choir and string orchestra.

The music is a composition of instruments from the Armenian and Anatolian traditions , which are fused with elements from many different musical directions. The line-up ranges from oriental and Armenian musical instruments such as Duduk , Zurna , Blul , Kamantsche , Kanun to western instruments such as trombone , alto, tenor , soprano saxophone , trumpet , bass, drums , keyboard and piano .

In the spring of 2004 Arto Tunçboyacıyan opened the “ANB Avantgarde Folk Music Club” in the historic heart of Yerevan, which quickly developed into a top address in the Armenian music scene.
