Douglas Ramsay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Douglas Alexander Ramsay (* 1945 in Detroit ; † February 15, 1961 in Berg-Kampenhout , Belgium ) was an American figure skater who started in a single run .

Ramsay was the second of four children from Alex and Jean Ramsey. At the age of eight, the real ice hockey enthusiast Ramsay took professional figure skating lessons from Bill Swallender . He had weaknesses in his duty, but was a very good and rousing skier, which mostly made him the darling of the audience. In 1960 he won the national junior championship in one of the tightest decisions in history, ahead of Bruce Heiss, the brother of Carol Heiss and the later start coach Frank Carroll . In his first senior championships in 1961, Ramsay finished fourth behind Bradley Lord , Gregory Kelley and Tim Brown . He was the only one to show a triple jump. Only the first three were qualified for the World Cup in Prague, but Tim Brown had to cancel because of the flu and so Ramsay moved up at short notice, which would be his undoing.

Together with his trainer Bill Swallender, Ramsay boarded the Sabena flight 548 , which was to take them to the World Cup in Prague. The night flight should stop in Brussels . There, however, the pilot had to abort the landing approach and make another attempt to try another runway. The plane crashed on farmland in Berg-Kampenhout. All 72 passengers, the crew and a farmer on the ground were killed, including the entire 18-man US crew and their 16 relatives. The world championship in Prague was canceled.

In 2011, Ramsay was inducted into the national Hall of Fame, as was the entire US team that crashed at the time.
