Sir James Douglas Wishart Thomson, 2nd Baronet ( October 30, 1905 - January 3, 1972 ) was a Scottish politician of the Unionist Party .

Life

Douglas Thomson was born in 1905 as the only son of the politician Sir Frederick Thomson, 1st Baronet and his wife Constance Margaret . When his father died, he inherited his title of nobility Baronet , of Glendarroch in the County of Midlothian. He studied at Eton College and the University College of the University of Oxford . In both 1926 and 1927 he took part in the Boat Race . Thomson graduated with a bachelor's degree and married Evelyn Margaret Isabel Douglas in 1935 . Together they had five descendants, Susan Evelyn Margaret (* 1936), Frederick Douglas David (* 1940), who inherited the baronet title, Vanessa Jean Wishart (* 1942), Jennifer Constance Anne (* 1945) and William Andrew Charles (* 1948) . Thomson was chairman of the Ben Line Steamers shipping company .

Political career

Since 1918 Thomson's father Frederick held the House of Commons mandate of the Aberdeen South constituency for the Unionist Party . As a result of his death in 1935, by-elections were required in this constituency, for which Douglas Thomson ran as the Unionist candidate. Despite losing votes, he won the mandate with a clear lead over the Labor Party candidate , Joseph F. Duncan . In the regular general election in 1935 , he defended his mandate. In 1941, Thomson served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Shipping. With a loss of 21.4%, Thomson barely defended his mandate in the general election in 1945 . Thomson resigned on November 4, 1946. Since this was not directly possible, he chose a common way out and accepted the Stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds . This is a title without tasks, which the British royal family awards. Due to the separation of the House of Commons and the Crown, the mandate of the House of Commons expires immediately. Thomson's party colleague Priscilla Buchan won the by-elections required in the Aberdeen South constituency .
