Dr. Mastermind is a speed and heavy metal band from the USA .

history

Singer and bassist Matt McCourt formed the band in 1982 under the name Evil Genius . In the same year he recorded a three-song demo with Dave Koening, Chon Carter and Kip Doran at the Ace Tunnel Sound Studio in Portland .

After several line-up changes, another demo was recorded in 1984 under the title Evil Genius . This was released in 2006 under the original band name Evil Genius with the title Dr. Mastermind Must Die! released. With this line-up, the band played a few regional concerts before they parted ways due to a lack of contract offers from music labels.

After McCourt sent the Evil Genius demo to Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records , he was suggested a contract with the label, provided that he could find a drummer for the band. He found this in Deen Castronovo, who had previously played with McCourt in the band Wild Dogs . Kurt James was the guitarist.

Shortly before the release of the album Dr. Mastermind in 1986, the band named on the advice of the label initially mastermind order. The name was changed to Dr. Mastermind changed because another American band called Mastermind already existed.

Initial tracks for the album were recorded at Cascade Studio in Portland, Oregon before it was completed at Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati, California.

After Dr. Mastermind was released, Castronovo, James and Chick left the band. From this point on, the band consisted mainly of McCourt, who in the following years brought out a DVD and several compilations on his own label US Metal Records . In the early 2000s, McCourt published a new edition of the Dr. Mastermind albums with additional live recordings and the song Evil Seed . During this period the DVD Captured Alive! - One Night Stand and the History of Evil Genius compilation with unpublished demo recordings released.

In 2005 a follow-up album called Sin Sandwich was recorded under a new, short-lived line-up .

Another compilation entitled Before and After was released in 2017 .
