The Dragonja in summer 2015: The river has dried up, only stagnant water in places. |
The Dragonja ( Italian Dragogna ) is a river in Istria that flows into the Adriatic Sea .
The river forms the border between Croatia and Slovenia for a long stretch . The borderline is controversial over the last few kilometers , as Slovenia also claims areas south of the river.
The river was known in ancient times under the names Argaonte and Argaone.
course
The Dragonja flows in the statistical region Obalno-kraška in Slovenia and the Istria County in Croatia . The 28 kilometer long river is created by the confluence of the Velika Dragonja (it. Dragogna Grande , source ) coming from the south and the Pinjevec (it. Dragogna Piccolo, Pignovazzo or Torrente dei Pini ) coming from the north in southern Slovenia. It flows south of Lucija or Piran into the Gulf of Trieste . Large salt pans are operated in the estuary area .
In the summer months with little rainfall, the river may not have any water.
