A remote shutter release is a tool with which a camera can be used without touching it or without being present at the location of the camera. With a cable release , a flexible Bowden cable is used to trigger the exposure , which is usually between 10 and 50 cm long.

Executions

  • mechanical Bowden cables - they are usually as a cable release referred to and may have a set screw for time studies have
  • electrical cable connections,
  • optical devices ( infrared transmitter and receiver or slave flash trigger),
  • Radio links,
  • Pneumatic connections are now rare.

Modern cameras combine the remote release to operate the shutter with an autofocus control option. The remote release can also be used to trigger the camera by means of a light barrier, a motion detector or an acoustic sensor.

The remote release is useful for people photography when the operator of the camera also wants to appear in the photo. The self-timer is also suitable for this application, as it gives the photographer a few seconds after pressing the release button to position himself in front of the lens before the photo is taken.

Remote releases can be used or even indispensable in many areas of photography, especially in nature photography , macro photography , animal photography , product photography , repro photography and night photography .

How the mechanical cable release works

The flexible connection and thus the spatial distance between the photographer and the camera avoid mechanical influences (vibrations) during the release process. For this purpose, pressure is transmitted to the shutter release of the camera by means of a Bowden cable in which there is a movable wire . There are variants with a locking screw or other clamping device that make it easier to keep the lock open for a longer period of time.

Double cable release

The mechanical double cable release is a special variant . With it, two camera functions can be carried out at the same time - or temporarily shifted - with one movement. This is necessary z. B. for macro shots with the bellows device . The first cable release closes the aperture of the lens to the set value, the second immediately activates the release of the camera .

When taking pictures with a telephoto lens , taking macro pictures or taking long exposures using a single-lens reflex camera , it may be necessary to avoid the vibrations of the mirror - and thus blurring of the picture - by operating the mirror and camera shutter independently of each other.

Digital cameras

Modern digital cameras can partly be controlled remotely via the computer using the connection cable and the corresponding software. Other models allow remote control from a mobile phone or tablet computer via Bluetooth or WLAN .
