Live and act

Drake Mabry, composer, ney flutist and Ebru artist, comes from a family of painters. He began his artistic career as an oboist in symphony orchestras before switching to tenor saxophone, flute and clarinet and playing in big bands and jazz ensembles. Since the 1980s, painting, photography and poetry have also become his artistic focus. He learned ebrum painting with Ayla Makas in Istanbul and Chinese ink painting with Chang Yang in San Diego. His poems were set to music by composers and used by theater groups for improvisations. Drakedonius, a volume of bilingual poems, paintings and photos, was published in 2011 by Le Plac'Art in France. In 2014 his latest Ebrug paintings will appear both in print and as e-books.

Mabry studied oboe at the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music with Harold Gomberg . He continued his education from 1971 with a degree in composition at Rice University and the University of California, San Diego with Will Ogdon , Paul Cooper , Krzysztof Penderecki and John Cage , which he completed with his doctorate. His compositions have been played and recorded worldwide and published in the US and Europe.

From 1971 he was principal oboist in various orchestras in the USA, Canada and Great Britain. From 1975 to 1978 he played saxophone, flute and clarinet in the Aspen Music Festival Big Band and directed his own jazz quintet. Since 1978 he has concentrated on working as a composer and improvisation musician. In 1988 he moved to France, where he directed the music school in Poitiers from 1999 to 2006 . He also taught a. a. at the University of Strasbourg , the University of Rennes and the University of Poitiers . He has lived on Long Island since 2010 .

He studied the traditional Turkish ney flute with Burcu Karadag at the Caferaga Medresesi and later with Ismail Hakki. Mabry is one of the few ney players who also play contemporary music and jazz. He also composes for this instrument in these styles. Mabry is a US and French citizen and currently lives in Paris, France.

The Ensemble TWO was founded in 2012 after a rather chance encounter at the Salzburg Mozarteum. Both artists found the idea of combining the European recorder with the Turkish ney flute very appealing. They researched and experimented how these two instruments from different cultures can be brought together musically. It was decided to focus on medieval music, new music specially written for them, Bulgarian and Turkish music.
