Dranda ( Abkhazian / Russian Дранда ; Armenian Դրանդա ) is a village with about 3,200 inhabitants in Abkhazia .
It is located in Gulrypsch Rajon near the Black Sea , about 20 kilometers from the capital Sukhum and about 7 kilometers from Gulrypsch .
Sukhum-Babushara Airport , which reopened in 2008, is located near the town . In Dranda itself there is an Orthodox cathedral from the 6th century.
In 1989 Dranda had 2,673 inhabitants, this number rose to over 3,200 by 2011. This makes Dranda one of the few places in Abkhazia with a population higher than the value from the last Soviet census. The majority of the population consists of Armenians (51.0%) and Abkhazians (36.3%), as well as Russians (7.1%) and Georgians (3.7%). Smaller minorities include Greeks (0.7%) and Ukrainians (0.5%).
