Klevendeich swing bridge
The Kleve Norddeicher swing bridge crosses the Pinnau and connects to the Haseldorfer march at Moor Reger district Klevendeich with Seestermüher march to the municipality Neuendeich .
The bridge was built in 1887 and is a protected cultural monument. It is the second oldest functioning swing bridge in Germany and, according to the list of swing bridges, the sixth oldest in Germany. From 1996 to 1999 the bridge was repaired for around € 1,380,000. In the spring of 2016, the rotating part of the bridge was dismantled again and enclosed with the other bridge arches and restored.
The Klevendeich Bridge is a riveted steel structure with three bridge arches, each of which belongs to a bridge part. The three parts of the bridge rest on a total of five supports, two abutments on the edges and three pillars as central supports. The road is single lane. The covering consists of wooden planks that are held together with iron straps.
The two northern units cannot be rotated. The southern part of the bridge has a rotating pillar in the middle and can therefore be rotated at an angle of 90 °. He clears the passage for the ships. In the past, the bridge was turned by hand using the handwheel that was still preserved. In the meantime it has lost its function as the rotation is operated by machine. An electric motor was installed next to the old handwheel. Today it drives the rotating mechanism with a running and rolling ring, which is clearly visible on the south side of the bridge.
