The three-banded plover ( Charadrius tricollarius ) is an African species from the family of Plover (Charadriidae). There are two subspecies.
description
The three-banded plover can be easily distinguished from other plover species by its double black chest band. In addition, it has a striking red ring around the eyes and a red beak base. The adult animal reaches a size of 18 cm.
The appearance of male and female birds is the same. In young birds, the colors of the plumage are less pronounced, and the red eye ring is missing.
As with most plovers, feeding occurs in a rhythm that consists of a quick run, an abrupt stop and a peck.
The nominate form Charadrius tricollaris tricollaris differs from the subspecies Charadrius tricollaris bifrontus, which only occurs in Madagascar, in that it has a lighter face and a lighter neck .
