The three- banded tetra ( Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus ; Greek heteros "different", rhabdus "line") is a freshwater fish from the middle and lower Amazon region . It is kept as an aquarium fish and was first introduced to Germany for this purpose in 1910. In the beginning it was often confused with the flag tetra ( Hemigrammus ulreyi ), which is why it is also referred to as "False Ulrey".

features

The elongated and laterally strongly flattened body of the three-banded tetra can reach a total length of four centimeters. The males, however, remain smaller than the somewhat plump females. The back is colored red-brown, the sides are yellow-brown in color. The belly is olive-colored to shiny silver. A three-colored longitudinal band extends from the gill cover to the root of the caudal fin . The top of the three partial bands is red, the middle white to shiny gold and the bottom stripe is deep black. The upper half of the iris shows a strong red. The fins are colorless or somewhat yellowish and sometimes end in white tips.

Fin formula : dorsal 10, anal 20–23

The three-volume tetra has 32 to 34 scales along a central longitudinal row (mLR) and eight to nine scales in the side line.

Reproduction

Like many other tetra species, the three- banded tetra is also a free spawner . Its eggs and brood are sensitive to light. The relatively small offspring swim freely from the fifth day after hatching.
