The Dormition Trinity Cathedral ( Russian Успенско-Троицкий собор ) is a Russian Orthodox church complex located in Kineshma and the bishopric of the Kineschma eparchy .

The Trinity Dormition Cathedral is located on the highest bank of the Volga River , in the area of the former Kineshma fortress, and harmonises with the surrounding landscape. It represents an architectural ensemble of two cathedrals. Both cathedral buildings lie on one axis - the Dormition Cathedral in the east, the Trinity Cathedral in the west, between the two there is a slender bell tower. The Trinity Dormition Cathedral is a main attraction of Kineshma.

history

The Church of the Dormition of Our Lady was the first element of the future building complex . This originally three-aisled "summer church" (ie church that cannot be heated) was completed in 1745. The construction was financed with donations from the population of Kineschma. In 1798 a high bell tower was built next to the church in the style of classicism , with an influence of costromic architectural traditions. The four-tier bell tower with a dome, which in turn is crowned with an intricate spire, is 63 meters high. On October 9, 1834, during his trip to the Volga, Tsar Nikolai I was visiting here. In 1838 the ensemble was supplemented by a new heated church with the patronage of the Trinity . Both church buildings were later rebuilt. So the Dormition Church got two ships . At the beginning of the 20th century, four corner towers with domes were built on the Trinity Church in addition to the only tower that had existed so far.

During the Soviet rule , in the late 1930s, the building complex was looted and closed for church services. In 1945 (according to other information in 1948) the Dormition Church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. From 1979 to 1999 it was restored four times. The Dreifaltigkeitskirche building was used by a picture gallery until 1990. It was then returned to the Russian Orthodox Church as well. 1993–1998 the bell tower was restored. In 2012, when the Kineschma eparchy was created through its separation from the Ivanovo eparchy , the building complex received the status of a cathedral and serves as the bishopric of this eparchy.

The Trinity Dormition Cathedral is a monument with federal significance (i.e. with special significance) and is a listed building.
