Dreigesang is the name for a polyphonic instrumentation in vocal music . "Dreigesang" refers to both the three-part piece of music and the vocal group consisting of three people.

Implementation practice

Originally used synonymously with the term Terzett , today the term is mainly used in alpine folk music . The line-up is usually with three equal solo voices , i.e. as a male or female triple sing, and more recently also as a mixed triple sing. The singing can be performed a cappella , but it is common to be accompanied by music in the lounge or other small instrumentation.

In traditional alpine folk music, two-part voice leading in thirds predominates, whereby there is often no clear separation of main or melodic voice and accompanying voice, but examples of real three -part voices are also recorded. There is, however, a fundamental difference to the three-part voice in the so-called younger folk song: while in the function- bound folk song the two-part movement is usually extended by a simple main stage bass part in the direction of a complete three-part harmony , the third part in the Alpine folk movement is an independent melodic voice that is mostly moved in close intervals to the other voices. It is also characteristic of the traditional three-part movement that the voices rarely start together, but rather a gradual development and enhancement of the sound is achieved through successive inserts.
