The three-horned Levkoje ( Matthiola tricuspidata ) is a species of the genus Levkojen ( Matthiola ) within the family of the cruciferous plants (Brassicaceae).
description
The three-horned Levkoje is an annual , woolly hairy to gray-felted plant that is 10–40 centimeters high. The simple leaves are lobed or roughly toothed to pinnate, their lobes are egg-shaped and rounded at the tip. The pedicels of the lower flowers are 2–5 millimeters long at the time of fruiting. The sepals are 7-11 millimeters long. The petals are 15–22 millimeters long and light purple or white. The star-haired and linear pods are protruding or curved, they are cylindrical, 25–100 millimeters long and 2–3 millimeters wide. The scar lobes have grown together to form a third horn. All three short horns are 2 to over 6 millimeters long, they are triangular and pointed.
The flowering period is between March and July.
The species has chromosome number 2n = 14 or 16.
Occurrence
Matthiola tricuspidata is found in Morocco, Algeria , Tunisia , Spain, the Balearic Islands , Corsica, Sardinia , Sicily, Malta, France, Italy, Croatia , Montenegro , Albania, Greece, Crete , the Aegean Sea, Cyprus , Turkey and in Israel before. It thrives on sandy coasts.
Taxonomy
The three-horned Levkoje was first described by Carl von Linné in Sp. Pl., Ed. 1: 663, 1753 as Cheiranthus tricuspidatus . The species was placed by William Townsend Aiton in Hortus Kew., Ed. 2, 4: 120, 1812 in the genus Matthiola . A synonym for Matthiola tricuspidata (L.) WTAiton is Matthiola tricuspidata subsp. pseudoxyceras Jafri .
