Oleksandr Karpeka

Oleksandr Danylowytsch Karpeka ( Ukrainian Олександр Данилович Карпека , Russian Александр Данилович Карпека Alexander Danilovich Karpeka ; born March 14, jul. / 26. March  1894 greg. In Pervomaiske , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 13. December 1918 in Kiev , Ukrainian State ) was a Ukrainian aircraft designer and military pilot. He was the brother of the pianist and music teacher Anna Artobolevskaya .

Life

Oleksandr Karpeka was born on the Lowra estate, Janiwka village in Ujesd Hluchiw in the Chernigov governorate, today's village of Pervomajske in Hluchiw district of the Ukrainian Oblast Sumy . At the beginning of the 20th century the family moved to Kiev.

While still a high school student, he joined the aviation group at the Polytechnic Institute in Kiev , one of the first aviation organizations in Ukraine, and from 1909 built numerous aircraft models. Igor Sikorski built an airplane based on his design for a biplane , and between 1911 and 1913 another three were built, which were tested by Pyotr Nesterov , among others . The steering control was used for the first time on his Karpeka-1 biplane in the spring / summer of 1911. In 1913 he built the two-seat Karpeka-3 biplane , which many aviation enthusiasts flown in Kiev.

After graduating from high school, he began studying at the physical and mathematical faculty of St. Vladimir University in Kiev and then at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic , but had to leave this at the beginning of the First World War and initially joined the infantry in Kiev. From December 1915 to July 1916 he studied at the Military Flying School ( Качинское высшее военное авиационное училище лётчиков Katschinskoje wysscheje wojennoje awiazionnoje utschilischtsche ljottschikow ) of the Imperial Russian Air Force .

From July 1917 on, he was used as a pilot in the 4th Fighter Wing in Romania. During the mission, he flew 122 hours on various types of aircraft ( Nieuport , Caudron , Morane-Saulnier L ).

To complete his university education he returned to Kiev in 1918, where he died of typhus at the age of 24 and was buried there in the Lukjanivska cemetery .

Karpeka's achievements in aircraft construction were recognized by both Igor Sikorski himself and Pyotr Nesterov. Before the war began, he created four types of aircraft and all of them flew.
