The phantasmal poison frog ( Epipedobates tricolor ), also Tricolor Baumsteiger , is in Ecuador beheimateter Froschlurch from the family of poison dart frog (Dendrobatidae; also: poison dart frogs).

features

The adult frogs have a head-torso length of 22 to 22.5 millimeters for the females and 20 to 20.5 millimeters for the males. They have three pale to lemon yellow stripes on a dark red-brown to black background color as well as strong red signal spots on the upper arm and on the inside of the lower legs. The animals can reach an age of 10 to 15 years.

Way of life

The diurnal frogs, which predominantly live on the forest floor and in low vegetation, feed on small insects such as springtails , small beetles and ants . The males call quite loudly - the "quality" of their calls is an essential criterion for the females when choosing a partner.

The males are territorial but may have to re-occupy territory every morning. If a male intrudes into a rival's territory, aggression may occur.

The eggs are around 2 mm in diameter and are laid in fallen leaves. The hatching larvae are then carried by the males to flowing or standing water.

Spread, endangerment and protection

From Epipedobates tricolor only seven populations along streams at altitudes from 1,000 to 1,769 meters in the Ecuadorian are Bolívar Province known. Due to habitat loss and possibly also due to pesticides, trapping by foragers and for medical purposes and due to the fungal disease chytridiomycosis , the species is considered endangered ( endangered according to IUCN ). It is under species protection (Wa 2, EG-VO B).

Systematics

Epipedobates tricolor is the type species of the genus ; important synonyms are Phyllobates tricolor and Dendrobates tricolor . In the 1970s, there was a mix-up of type material from Epipedobates anthonyi , which is why the two species were occasionally interchanged with one another.

The species is part of the "West Andean clade" of the genus Epipedobates , which separated from the Amazon clade about 10 million years ago due to the uplift of the Andes .
