Dreux IV. De Mello

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dreux IV of Mello (* 1138 ; † March 3, 1218 ) was lord of Saint-Bris and Baulche , later lord of Mello , castellan of Loches and Châtillon-sur-Indre , and connétable of France .

He was the son of Dreux III. de Mello and his wife Basilie von Beauvais, his maternal grandmother was an aunt of the Connétables of France, Count Rudolf I of Clermont . The Connétable named Dreux, who was in office until 1106, was probably his ancestor. His older brother Guillaume I. de Mello (* 1134; † 1191) had inherited the paternal rule of Mello. Dreux had received the dominions of Saint-Bris and Baulche. They were both vassals of the Earl of Beaumont .

Together with Guillaume II. Des Barres , Dreux defended Châteauroux against Richard the Lionheart in August 1189 . With his brother Guillaume he took part in the entourage of King Philip II August in the third crusade . After the conquest of Acre, he was entrusted with guarding those prisoners who were assigned to the French king. In the further course of the crusade Guillaume died, with which Dreux inherited the rule of Mello. He stayed in the Holy Land when King Philip II returned to France and fought in the Battle of Arsuf in 1191 .

Back in France, Dreux was appointed royal connétable by King Philip II. As such, he took up the peace talks with Richard the Lionheart in 1194, after he had triumphed over the French king in the battle of Fréteval . In this office he conquered Loches and Châtillon-sur-Indre for the crown, where he was castellan in 1204.
