Rudolf I of Clermont called the Red ( French: Raoul Ier de Clermont dit le Roux , † October 15, 1191 before Acre ) was Lord of Creil since 1153 , Count of Clermont (-en-Beauvaisis) since 1162 at the latest and since 1163 by Marriage to Herr von Breteuil . He was the son of Count Rainald II of Clermont and Clementia of Bar .

King Ludwig VII made Rudolf a Constable of France in 1164 . In the summer of 1190 he went to the Holy Land in an advance detachment of the Third Crusade under the leadership of Henry II of Champagne , where he took part in the siege of Acre . The city fell on July 12, 1191 after King Philip II. August arrived with his main army. He stayed in the army that carried on the Third Crusade after the king had returned to Europe on July 31, 1191. He fell on October 15, 1191 in a battle off Acre.

In 1153 Rudolf married Adele von Breteuil († after 1196/97), the eldest daughter of Valeram (Galeran) III., Lord von Breteuil from the house of Le Puiset . By virtue of their rights, he became lord of Breteuil when his father-in-law died in 1163. Rudolf and Adele had (at least) four children:

  • Katharina, (* before 1178, † September 19/20, 1212/13) 1192 Countess of Clermont, ⚭ 1184 Ludwig , 1191 Count of Blois (X April 14, 1205 in Adrianople )
  • Aélis (* before 1178; † before 1182)
  • Mahaut (1190/1200 attested), ⚭ Wilhelm II., Lord of Vierzon († 1216)
  • Philippe (* after 1178; attested in 1182)

After Rudolf's death, Adele von Breteuil married Theobald III for the second time. von Crépy , lord of Nanteuil-le-Haudouin (testified in 1156/80, † before January 20, 1183); she was buried in Variville .

After Rudolf's death, the county of Clermont passed to his daughter Katharina; their son, Count Theobald VI. von Blois , sold the property to King Philip II August in 1218.
