The Drive Green Highway is a car transporter from a series of ships that was planned, designed and built in a particularly environmentally friendly manner with the support of research funds from the Japanese government.

description

The ship was built at the Japan Marine United Corporation Ariake shipyard and measured 76,387 GT with a length of around 200 m, a width of 37.5 m and a draft of 9.9 m. The load capacity is 20,034 dwt and corresponds to around 7,500 vehicles. The ship is equipped for a crew of 31, was registered in Panama and classified by the Japanese class NK. The ship's LED lighting is fed by the solar power system when the conditions are right.

To increase flexibility and loading capacity for tall but also heavy vehicles, three of the 12 freight decks of the Drive Green Highway can be moved upwards.

The main engine is a low-speed two-stroke engine of the type MAN B&W 7S60ME-C8, built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., with a rated output of 13,000 kW at 102.6 / min, which gives the ship a rated speed of 20 knots. 4 auxiliary diesels with 5,500 kW each are available for power generation.

background

Environmental protection and sustainable operation played an important role in the Drive Green research project and were supported by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and the ClassNK classification society. The focus was on heat recovery and the reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur oxide (SOx) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from the main engine, which is equipped with an integrated turbo charger cut-off and is operated with water-emulsified fuel. The water evaporates when the emulsion is injected, increasing fuel atomization and reducing the temperature, reducing the formation of nitrogen oxides.

An important element is the largest installed solar power system on a merchant ship with 900 modules and around 150 kW nominal power. Manufactured by Tokyo-based Solar Frontier, the so-called CIGS solar cell is a type of solar cell that provides a higher power yield under salt fog and hot climatic conditions compared to crystalline solar modules. They were installed on the top deck. In addition, the wind resistance was reduced, an energy-saving stern was installed and a particularly low-friction paint was applied to the hull.

The Drive Green Highway has received the award "Ship of the Year 2016" of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers. The award ceremony took place on July 7, 2016.
