The Drogarati Cave ( Greek Σπήλαιο Δρογκαράτης Spíleo Drogarátis ) is a show cave on the Greek island of Kefalonia . Due to its special acoustics, it is occasionally used for concerts.
location
The cave is located about 3 kilometers southwest of Sami at a height of 120 m above sea level. The nearest town is Chaliotata ( Χαλιωτάτα ). 2.8 kilometers north is the Zervati shaft cave, 3.3 kilometers north is the Melissani cave, which can be navigated by tourist boats . Other caves in the area are the Theodoros cauldron and the Eleusa collapse basin.
description
The more than 150 million year old Drogarati Cave has been known for over 300 years when its ceiling partially collapsed in an earthquake and the sinkhole was created, which is still the entrance today. The Spaläologen Anna and Yiannis Petrochilos explored the cave before it was opened in 1963 to the public. A staircase leads through the tree-covered sinkhole to the so-called “royal balcony”, a natural platform from which the large hall of the cave can be overlooked. A circular path leads back across the floor of the room to the entrance. The hall is 65 m long, 45 m wide and around 20 m high. An adjoining 2 km long labyrinth of numerous corridors and chambers is not accessible to visitors. The cave has numerous stalactites and stalagmites , but many of them have broken off. The temperature is 18 ° C all year round. The humidity is 90%.
The huge cave is occasionally used for concerts because of its remarkable acoustics. The sopranos Maria Callas and Maria Farantouri sang here .
