Drugslab (dt. About drug laboratory ) is a Dutch web video series, the weekly YouTube is released. In the episodes, a drug is consumed and the effects are presented in various ways. The program is aimed at young people and wants to work towards safer drug consumption and minimize risks in the sense of safer use . The show is based on an idea by Jelle Klumpenaar.

principle

The actors and presenters of Drugslab until July 2018 were Bastiaan Rosman, Nellie Benner and Rens Polman. The latter has since been replaced by Dzifa Kusenuh. Each week two of them lead through the show; one as a consumer and one as a trip sitter . While intoxicated, the effects of the substance are studied. For example, the hosts play games of skill to demonstrate the influence of drugs on cognitive and motor skills. Pulse and body temperature are also measured before and after consumption. In addition, substance-specific dangers are pointed out and asked to subject your own drugs to a drug test before consumption .

At the end of each test there is a separate video in which do's and don'ts are summarized.

Viewers can suggest substances to the hosts using YouTube's comment function. There is a wide range of drugs that have already been consumed: the drug lab devoted itself to cocaine , LSD , alprazolam , ecstasy and opioid-containing substances such as purple drank and oxycodone . Legal drugs such as alcohol and caffeine are also tested. However, the hosts declared that they did not want to consume any “addictive drugs ” such as heroin or methamphetamine .

production

Drugslab is an offer from the Dutch public broadcaster BNNVARA and is published by the editorial team of the television program Spuiten en Slikken . The videos are always uploaded with English subtitles and published under the Creative Commons license .

criticism

The Youtube channel PsychedSubstance published a video in 2017 in which the drug lab was accused of a lack of care in research and the unwillingness to openly deal with sometimes dangerous false information. Some voices accuse the program of luring young people into using drugs. Ann-Kathrin Jeske writes in Die Welt that the “educational claim ” of Drugslab is “not wrong”. “Anyone who watches the show”, “however, is more inclined to take a pill yourself”. The video platform YouTube itself has been repeatedly accused of tolerating said content. The company responded in a statement that Drugslab has a clear "educational value".
