features

Dryopteris arguta
Underside of a leaf frond

Dryopteris arguta has a somewhat variable design. The leaves are evergreen and 25–90 inches long and 8–30 inches wide. The petiole is a quarter to a third as long as the leaf; at least at the base it is covered with light brown scales. Occasionally the feathers stand at an angle from the frond and give the leaf a disheveled and pointed appearance; the toothed feathers can have awns on the tips. The Sori sit approximately in the middle between the midrib and edge of the leaflet. The thin, concave indusia are densely packed and usually completely cover the sporangia . The number of chromosomes is 2n = 82.

Occurrence

Dryopteris arguta is distributed in western North America in coastal regions and mountains from British Columbia to California to Arizona . There the English common name Coastal Woodfern is used. It grows at altitudes from 0 to 1800 meters. It thrives, for example, in the evergreen mixed forests of California, California oak forests ( chaparral ) and on the shady slopes of the flat and hill country of California. The habitats are partly part of the Mediterranean zonobiom .
