Jamjid ibn Abdullah (1963)

Sayyid Jamschid ibn Abdullah GCMG (also: Jam sh id bin Abdullah Al Said , Arabic جمشيد بن عبد الله, DMG Ǧamšīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ; * September 16, 1929 , Unguja ) was the last ruling sultan of Zanzibar . As head of the branch of the Bu-Saʿīd dynasty , he is the "descendant" of the Prophet Mohammed and Grand Master of the Order of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar and the Most Illustrious Order of Independence of Zanzibar .

Life

Jamjid succeeded his father after his short reign, when Zanzibar was in the process of gaining independence from the British protectorate . He ruled the sultanate from July 1, 1963 to January 12, 1964. On December 10, 1963, Zanzibar received its independence as a constitutional monarchy. As a result, however, riots developed and in the Zanzibar Revolution , in which the black African majority rebelled against the Arab upper class, the monarchy was abolished. The People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba came into being .

The king fled with his family and a handful of children who were in his care, into exile, first to Oman and then to Great Britain, where he has since lived in Portsmouth with his wife and six children. He is still the head of the royal family.

  1. Sayyida Anisa bint Salim Al-Said (* 1938, 1955–1968, divorced)
  2. Zuleika bint Abdullah Al Aufy (married 1970)
