Chalifa ibn Said

Sultan Khalifa ibn Said

Sayyid Chalifa ibn Said al-Busaidi , GCMG (* 1852 - † February 13, 1890 ; Arabic خليفة بن سعيد البوسعيدي, DMG Ḫalīfa b. Saʿīd al-Būsaʿīdī ; also Khalifa ) was the younger brother and successor of the Sultan Barghasch ibn Said of Zanzibar and son of the Sultan Said ibn Sultan of Oman . Chalifa ruled Zanzibar from March 26, 1888 until his death.

By his brother and predecessor Barghasch, Khalifa was put in prison in 1870 for (alleged) involvement in an attempted coup, and his sister Salme was released years later.

After Barghash suddenly died during tough negotiations with the German East African Society (DOAG), Khalifa was appointed to succeed it as sultan. He was much more accommodating towards the DOAG and signed the so-called Coastal Treaty on April 28, 1888 , according to which Zanzibar leased sovereignty over the East African coastal zone and the customs revenue from its ports in return for compensation payments from the company. The change of flag led to the uprising of the East African coastal population .

Like barghash, Khalifa promoted the fight against slavery and was named Knight Grand Cross of the British Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1889.

Khalifa's successor was his brother Ali ibn Said , who, however, had to accept British protectorate rule over the Sultanate of Zanzibar as early as 1890 .
