Jaramana ( Arabic جرمانا, DMG Ǧaramānā , also Jaramana ) is a city in the Rif Dimaschq governorate in the southern heartland of Syria .
Jaramana is located about 10 km southeast of Damascus , between downtown Damascus and the international airport . At the 1981 census, the population was 64,305. The small town has become a suburb of Damascus, with an estimated 189,888 inhabitants in 2009.
A Palestinian camp that was established in 1948 belongs to the city . In 1967 Palestinians displaced from the Golan Heights were resettled here (see Palestinian refugee problem ). In December 2008 there were 18,740 refugees in the camp.
Since the beginning of the Iraq war in 2003, many Iraqis, especially Christian Assyrians, have fled to Syria. About 70 percent of the 200,000 Iraqis in the country (2009) settled in the greater Damascus area, a larger number also in Jaramana, which became the Iraqi quarter of the capital.
Vegetables are grown on irrigated fields in the area. The city's economic prosperity is primarily due to its function as a trading center. With the Iraqi refugees came a wealthy class of the population.
