Dschinghis Khan is a German hit , composed by Ralph Siegel , with the lyrics by Bernd Augener . It was interpreted by the group Dschinghis Khan and was the contribution of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Eurovision Song Contest 1979 . It has been covered by numerous artists.

history

The written of Meinunger and Seal song has influences of disco music on, some by groups such as Boney M . It is about the eponymous Mongolian warrior who was stronger than his enemies and got any woman he wanted. During the performance, the band members wore themed costumes in different colors and performed an oriental- inspired dance.

As the ninth song played on the evening of the competition, it reached fourth place out of 19 entries with 86 points. The song was subsequently a great success in Germany and reached number one in the German single charts - where it lasted for 29 weeks -, number three in Switzerland and number eight in Austria . I.a. The group also appeared in the ZDF hit parade . The single was awarded gold for over 250,000 units sold , making it one of the best-selling German hits since 1975.

Cover versions

As early as 1979 coverte the Finnish singer Frederik the song in Finnish language with a text by Juha Vainio . Since Ralph Siegel liked the version, he offered the singer to cover Dschinghis Khan's other song Hajji Halef Omar , which also happened under the title Sheikki Ali Hassan . In 2008 the Japanese idol group Berryz Kobo covered the song. The piece reached number 4 on the Japanese Oricon charts . Other versions are available in Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek and Thai. The Spanish version of Sin Amor was developed by Ivan sung, reaching in Spain Square 1. The German band Die Apokalyptischen Reiter coverte the song on a likewise Genghis Khan titled EP . In the Chinese film The Chronicles of the Spirit Temple, a cover version is also sung in Chinese.

Further use

The piece was also used in a German sex comedy called Sonnyboy und Sugarbaby (English She's 19 and Ready ).
