history

Again, after the success of Genghis Khan, a title written by opinion and seal was chosen. The piano-dominated, slow song with influences from the classical chanson is about how performing artists, such as clowns or actors, have to hide their true feelings ("you can't see what it looks like deep inside them ...").

As the twelfth song played on the evening of the competition, it achieved second place out of 19 entries with 128 points. The song reached number 11 in the German charts - where it could last 15 weeks. Ralph Siegel himself played the piano on stage. During the performance he wore white gloves with a small clown figure on each. Four other clowns performed pantomime gestures. It was Katja Ebstein's third and last appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest, after she had already successfully participated in 1970 ( miracles happen again and again ) and 1971 ( this world ) .

The song was already sung by Ebstein on March 24, 1980 at disco and on May 19, 1980 in the ZDF hit parade . In the ZDF hit parade she reached number two, whereupon she was allowed to appear again on June 23, 1980. This time she reached number one, so she appeared on July 28, 1980 for the third and last time with the piece - however, she presented it again on May 13, 2000 out of competition in a medley on the show. She also recorded it in English ("It's Showtime"), French ("Théâtre") and Italian ("Teatro").
