The Djungarian Gate is a valley plain and a mountain pass ( Alataw Pass , Alatau Pass, Alataw Shankou ( Chinese 阿拉山口 , Pinyin Ālāshānkǒu , English Alataw Pass )) on the border between East Kazakhstan ( Almaty Province ) and Northwest China ( Autonomous Bortala district of the Mongols in the west of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region ).
The gate is located between the Djungarian Alatau in the west and the mountain ranges Birliktau and Mailytau in the east.
Since ancient times, the most important trade routes between the Seven Rivers in Central Asia and Djungary in Xinjiang have run through the valley and over the pass . Even today the only railway line connecting Kazakhstan and China runs through the Djungarian Gate. However, it is no longer of any importance for road traffic, as the two important trunk roads lead through two other levels in the south and north of the Alatau.
The Djungarian Gate is the westernmost point on the Bei-Jiang Line from Urumqi to Alashankou Station .
