Dubthach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dubthach [ 'dufθax ] ("the dark one") is the name of a warrior from Ulster in the Ulster cycle of the Celtic mythology of Ireland .

mythology

Dubthach, nicknamed dael (also dóel) ulad ("dung beetle from Ulster") or daeltenga (also dóeltenga) ("dung beetle tongue") because of its sharp tongue , is a feared warrior. From Celtchar mac Uthechair he received the spear Lúin Cheltchair , which is so bloodthirsty that it has to be cooled in a cauldron with poisonous broth in order not to burn its bearer.

In Longas mac nUislenn ("The Exile of the Sons of Uislius") Dubthach is one of the guarantors that King Conchobar mac Nessa sends to Deirdre and Naoise to persuade them to return. But since the king is betraying and has Naoise murdered, Dubthach and the other two guarantors, Conchobar's son Cormac Conn Longas and Fergus mac Róich, go to Connacht to Ailill mac Máta and Medb in anger to avenge the betrayal. In Táin Bó Cuailnge ("The cattle robbery of Cooley ") he therefore fights together with the Connachtern against the Ulter with their main hero Cú Chulainn .

In the poem about Liamuin (Lyons Hill, County Kildare ) of the Dindsenchas ("place name traditions ") the following family tree of Dubthach is given:

Dubthach was son of Fergna noble and fair son of Muredach son of Sinell, son of Bregon the famous for victory, son of Oengus, son of Eogan.

The opposite of the belligerent Dubthach is the poet and judge ( fili ) of King Conchobar mac Nessa, Sencha mac Ailella , who is always looking for balance .
