history
After the county government was first housed in a two-story wooden building, it moved to a red brick building in 1843. Starting in 1869, considerations were made about the construction of a new building, which in 1890 led to the decision to build today's courthouse. The Swiss architect Fridolin Heer was commissioned with the construction . The building was constructed of brick and limestone in the Beaux Arts style and occupies an area of 27 × 38 meters. The height of the tower is 58 meters and is closed by a four meter high bronze statue of Justitia.
In 1971 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places with reference number 71000298 .
Immediately adjacent to the building is the Dubuque County Jail, the old Dubuque District Jail, built in 1858 and registered as a National Historic Landmark .
