Durbanville was an independent municipality in the Western Cape Province of South Africa . It now belongs to the Metropolitan Municipality of Cape Town and is located in the Tygerberg district .

Durbanville is a rural suburb with 54,286 inhabitants on the northern edge of Cape Town, which is surrounded by wineries and wheat farms. The site was originally named Pampoen Kraal and was in 1836 in honor of Benjamin D'Urban in D'Urban renamed. The village has had its current name since June 1882. In 1897 a municipal administration was formed and in 1904 the settlement received official municipal status.

The Durbanville Wine Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in the Cape . There are the wineries Diemersdal, Groot Phesantekraal, Meerendal, Nitida, Hillcrest, Altydgedacht, D'Aria, Bloemendal, Klein Boosboom, De Grendel and Durbanville Hills. The Diemersdal farm was founded in 1698 by Hendrik Sneewind and later taken over by Captain Diemer, who married the widow Sneewind. The historic building was built in Cape Dutch architecture .
