Strikethrough target sign

A historic tram of the Munich tram with a crossed-out destination sign

A crossed-out destination sign was a special form of passenger information in which the destination sign of a local public transport system was crossed out or highlighted with a diagonal bar in contrasting colors . As a result, the respective transport company conveyed certain additional information to the passengers waiting at the stops - similar to the line number that was crossed out - that went beyond the text on the sign. In detail, however, the strikethrough had very different meanings:

  • The Berlin S-Bahn provided the objective signs of the existing 1,953 to 1,958 so-called completers trains with a continuous red diagonal stripes at the train groups 1 and 3 and a continuous blue diagonal stripes in the traction group L. These accelerated trains in rush hours did not stop at intermediate stations on West Berlin area.
  • The tram Chemnitz marked to 2004 different line objectives, that is Einrückfahrten the depot and diversions, with a green slash in the target plate.
  • On the Athens metro, red crossed-out destination signs used to indicate short journeys that only drove to an intermediate terminus.
  • In Budapest Bus traffic a light brown diagonal bar served until September 2008 to those lines to identify which crossed the city limits. This should inform the passengers of the correspondingly higher on-site tariff.
  • In Viennese bus traffic , a green diagonal line on the route table indicated the increased tariff in inner-city bus traffic.
