Durk van Blom

Durk van Blom (born December 19, 1877 in Leeuwarden , † November 29, 1938 in Leiden ) was a Dutch economist.

Life

Durk was the son of the civil servant Jarich Gelinde van Blom (* July 12, 1839 in Drachten; † October 13, 1893 in Leeuwarden) and his wife Catharina Margaretha Duursma (* January 23, 1853 in Smallingerland; † October 1, 1908 in Breukelen) . After attending the high school in his hometown, he enrolled at the University of Leiden on September 22, 1896 to study law. He received his doctorate in law on June 6, 1900, was a clerk in the central statistical office in The Hague for a few months in 1901 and became editor-in-chief of the left-liberal newspaper Het Vaderland on July 1, 1901 . On December 31, 1906, he left there and on September 1, 1907, he became professor of constitutional, administrative and commercial law at the Technical University of Delft , where on May 1, 1909, he switched to the professorship for political economy, labor law, factory legislation and mining law .

When the Dutch School of Commerce was established in Rotterdam in 1913, he became an associate professor for industrial and social legislation. On October 18, 1915, he was appointed professor of political economy and statistics at the University of Leiden. He took on this task on January 19, 1916 with the speech De economie als juristenvak (German: The economy as a legal subject ). Blom wrote numerous articles for the scientific journals De Economist and De Grids . In 1929 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and in 1910 a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden, of which he was chairman in 1928. In the academy year 1933/34 he was elected Rector of the Leiden Alma Mater , in which capacity he gave the Rector's speech Economie en samenleving (German: Economy and Society ) on February 8, 1934 . He was also an honorary doctor of the University of Edinburgh , Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and in 1914 was an officer of the Greek Order of the Redeemer .

family

Blom married Emma Helena van der Goot on August 5, 1902 in Groningen (born September 14, 1872 in Sappemeer, † January 7, 1947 in Leiden), the daughter of Jan Romkes van der Groot (born April 12, 1840 in Akkrum ; † October 14, 1885 in Sappemeer) and Anna Mulder (born January 24, 1843 in Hoogezand). The marriage has two sons and a daughter. From the children we know:

  • Jarich Gelinde van Blom (born June 4, 1903 in The Hague; † June 7, 1985) married on February 9, 1949 in Moeara Emin / Sumatra with Louise Henriette Smit (born June 18, 1911 in Kinderdijk)
  • Jan Rombout van Blom (* May 22, 1907 in Leiden; † April 17, 1986) married to Suzette AEW Hartmann (* May 27, 1909; † March 31, 1996)
  • Catharina Margaretha van Blom (born February 24, 1909 in Delft; lived 1975 in Amsterdam) married on March 7, 1932 in Batavia to Johannes Knottenbelt (born January 22, 1905 in Sloten; † August 28, 1967 in Luik)
