Dwight Winton Berreman (born May 30, 1928 in Salem (Oregon) ) is an American physicist . The Berreman effect is named after him.

life and work

Berreman was born in 1928 as the first son of Seville (née Ricks) and Joel Van Meter Berreman (1900–1986), who later became a professor of sociology at the University of Oregon . He studied at the University of Oregon, where he received his Bachelor of Science (BS) in 1950 and his Master of Science (MS) in physics in 1952 . He then went to the California Institute of Technology as a doctoral student , where he received his doctorate (Ph.D.) in 1955 for his work in the field of X-ray optics and small - angle X-ray scattering .

After completing his doctorate, Berreman returned to the University of Oregon and initially worked in the field of X-ray optics at Applied Research Laboratories . After a few guest months at the Stanford Research Institute in 1956/57, he became Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Oregon in 1957 . In 1961 Berreman took a position at Bell Laboratories where he later rose to Member of Technical Staff . During his time at Bell Labs, he continued to work on the optics of X-rays, but also in visible and infrared light, as well as X-ray optics, but also on lattice dynamics and liquid crystals .

Berreman is a member of the American Physical Society .

His younger brother Gerald Duane (1930-2013) was a noted anthropologist and professor at UC Berkeley .
