SRI International ( SRI ), founded as the Stanford Research Institute of Stanford University , is a research institute based in Menlo Park on San Francisco Bay that develops practical applications of the natural sciences .

The institute was founded in 1946, has been independent from the university since 1970, and has been called SRI International since 1977 . It is financed through contracts from governments, companies and other organizations.

The SRI conducts research in many disciplines, for example in medicine and information technology.

In December 1968, Douglas C. Engelbart from SRI not only showed the computer mouse invented there for the first time , but also, for example, a video conference .

The first addressee and recipient of a message in the Arpanet , the origin of the Internet , was the SRI in the following year. In November 1977, the SRI carried out the first data transfer over several completely different networks, from a van with a radio transmitter near San Francisco via University College London to the University of Southern California .

Several dozen companies, such as Nuance Communications, have been founded out of the SRI . This is how the Siri speech recognition of the Apple iPhone was created .
