Dyrøya is one of the four uninhabited islands in Øksnes Vestbygd in Vesterålen . It is part of the Norwegian Fylke Nordland in the municipality of Øksnes .

The main town on the island is Barkestad, which was abandoned around 1970. The reasons for this can be found in the lack of infrastructure, which also affects the neighboring islands of Skogsøya , Tindsøya and Nærøya , for modern times.

The former port of call of the Hurtigruten Barkestad had a very old tradition as a fishing village, but over time it became too unprofitable. Translated into German, the name of the island is "Tierinsel", which indicates that domestic animals and reindeer are kept for seasonal reasons.
