Nærøya is an island in the Norwegian Fylke Nordland belonging to the municipality Øksnes belongs. Like the other three islands in Øksnes Vestbygd , Nærøya was abandoned by the inhabitants around 1970 due to a lack of infrastructure.
Since 1989 the island in the main town Finvåg has been revitalized a bit. The place had a boarding school from 1868 with the associated church. A guest house has now been opened there, which is also used as a remote conference venue.
It is believed that the name "Nærøya" is derived from the name of the Norse van god Njörd . The Øksnes Vestbygd with the natural harbor Finvåg is still a popular destination for sailors today.
