E, the scarlet letter is a German silent film drama from 1917 by Emerich Hanus with Martha Novelly and Werner Krauss in the leading roles.

action

Unlike the plot of the novel, this cinematic adaptation of the Hawthorne story extends from the Middle Ages to modern times. Here, too, the focus is on a woman ostracized by the village community, who is condemned to wear a scarlet letter, but here an "E" (in the novel it is an "A") on her chest because of an alleged outrage. She is coveted by men, but vehemently rejects her most stubborn admirer, a crippled copperplate engraver.

Production notes

E, the scarlet letter, passed the film censorship in October 1917 and was first presented in the same month as part of a press screening in Düsseldorf. At that time the five-stroke had a length of 1858 meters. After a new censorship, E, the scarlet letter, was shortened to 1,724 meters.

criticism

“The plot is extremely interesting and exciting ... The direction, which Emerich Hanus provided, created images of intimate charm and rare beauty. Martha Novelly achieved sensational success in the female lead. The charm of her appearance, her graceful play, her noble gestures create new admirers from film to film. (...) Werner Kraus, who gave the crippled engraver, who was rejected by her, offered a brilliant character study ... This film can be described as a work of art ... "
